    • In this webinar, Dr. Jennifer Christian provided a brief and basic overview of one of the major strategies for reducing work disability: temporary or transitional work assignments (TWA). She described why, when, and how to arrange and monitor TWA during the period while RETAIN participants are still recovering from their injury or illness. The webinar included an introduction to basic concepts and the role of the RTW Coordinator in facilitating TWA and will highlight teaching cases as examples to show how the process works, issues that often arise, and some strategies for getting around predictable obstacles.

    • RTW Coordinators (three persons maximum from each RETAIN state) are invited to join this optional virtual meeting to discuss current barriers their projects are facing, share experiences, and identify solutions. Topics will include continued stakeholder engagement as referrals ramp up, online service delivery, and tailoring outreach to employment sectors.  This is your chance to connect with RETAIN RTW Coordinators in other states, bounce ideas off one another, and brainstorm new strategies. Participants will also have an opportunity to propose topics of discussion, and we will collectively problem-solve.

    • The Job Accommodation Network (JAN), a service of the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), Department of Labor, provides personalized consulting, resource referrals, and tools to support employer’s SAW/RTW efforts.     • As people return to work in the wake of COVID-19, there are common rules that should be followed to ensure a safe work environment while not discriminating against workers with disabilities.     • Successful job retention cases require a multi-faceted approach to case management. How can RETAIN Directors and other state team members support the Return to Work (RTW) Coordinators in their endeavors to bring a RETAIN case to successful closure? The webinar will present Stay at Work (SAW)/RTW case studies to set the stage for a panel discussion on job retention. Panelists will highlight the roles and functions of RTW teams and review the need for clearly defined roles and responsibilities that support the unique physical and mental health needs of each participant. We engaged a panel of experts who will address your job retention questions as well as provide practical information that RTW Coordinators and States can use in working with individuals enrolled in their RETAIN project.

      Amanda Latimore, Ph.D, MA is an epidemiologist with more than a decade of experience using research to inform behavioral health policies, practice and programs. Dr. Latimore is the Director of  Center for Addiction Research and Effective Solutions (CARES), where she manages a multidisciplinary team carrying out a portfolio of work related to behavioral health, with a focus on addiction and addressing the needs of those impacted by addiction through the social determinants of health. She draws on nearly a decade of experiences providing guidance to community-based programs and city- and state-level public officials from across the US on data and behavioral health. One such project involved working with the Chamber of Commerce in West Virginia, where she conducted in-depth interviews and focus groups with small and large businesses to inform policies and programs related to the employment of people in recovery. Dr. Latimore is also Adjunct Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she continues to teach social epidemiology and elevates the importance of the social determinants of addiction.

      Ashley Shaw, MS, MBA, is CORE (Creating Opportunities for Recovery Employment) Director with Marshall Health within the division of Addiction Sciences. In this capacity, Ashley serves as the primary program liaison for CORE’s 12-county regional infrastructure purposed to provide workforce development training and job placement assistance to individuals in recovery. Ashley has 10 years of professional experience in workforce development program oversight working extensively with non-profit organizations in creating career skills training programs, building collaborative community partnerships, and assisting individuals in obtaining competitive employment opportunities. Additionally, Ashley has taught in both public schools and post-secondary education institutions. She has a Bachelor’s degree in English with a concentration in secondary education, a master’s degree in Sociology/Criminal Justice, and a Master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources. Above all, Ashley’s desire is to assist individuals is gaining the knowledge and skills needed to lead happy, fulfilled, and self-sustained lives.

    • Description: Appropriate implementation of ADA and the provision of reasonable accommodations in the workplace is a significant part of a successful RTW/SAW model. In order to foster successful sustained employment outcomes, Return to Work coordinators must have a working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) as well as the Reasonable Accommodations Process. This CoP will equip Return to Work Coordinators, and other RETAIN team members with an understanding of the ADA Amendments Act, essential functions and reasonable accommodations.
